There were over 25,000 spectators in the stands at the Tokyo Dome to watch Terje Haakonsen school the competition in the closing moments of the Nissan X-Trail Quarterpipe Jam in Tokyo, Japan.
The massive 6-meter quarterpipe was setup inside the huge stadium just like a basketball stadium would be like here in the US. There sure is a big difference between how the public in Japan vs. the US views the professional sport of snowboarding, could you imagine seeing a snowboard event inside the Staples Center? The Japanese love snowboarding and with only three seconds left on the clock, Terje Haakonsen, who had already blasted the highest air of the night, threw down a massive mctwist that brought the entire crowd to their feet, leaving no doubt in anybody’s mind that Terje deserved the win.
Terje pocketed 2,000,000 Yen (US $20,000) for his efforts and gave an emotional acceptance speech as he thanked the crowd and announced that this would be his last Nissan X-Trail Event.
After the event, Terje and his family hopped on a plane to Hawaii where they are enjoying a little much-deserved R&R. Go Terje!!!
